Washington Manassas Airport Is One Step Away From Commercial Airline Service!

After decades without scheduled passenger flights, Washington Manassas Airport in Virginia has officially cleared a major FAA hurdle by receiving its Part 139 Airport Operating Certificate, the certification required before commercial airlines can begin operations.

FAA officials called the achievement “extremely rare” for an airport historically focused on private aviation. It is reportedly the first such certification for a Virginia airport in more than 50 years.

Now comes the big question: Which airline will fly from Manassas?

Airport Director Juan Rivera says the airport is “very close” to securing an airline, with hopes of launching the first commercial flights in November 2027.

The planned transformation is substantial, including a new 32,000-square-foot passenger terminal with TSA security screening, passenger gates, baggage claim facilities and concessions. At least 2,000 parking spaces are also planned for airline passengers.

The initial goal is 3–4 departures per day, with an eventual ambition of as many as 24 departures daily. The airport is expected to target low-cost and ultra-low-cost carriers.

Local leaders believe the new service could bring a major economic boost to Manassas and surrounding Northern Virginia by attracting travelers, businesses and visitors to the region.

However, the expansion also comes with challenges, including concerns about noise, traffic and environmental impacts for nearby communities.

For now, commercial flights remain more than a year away. But after years of planning, inspections and preparation, Manassas has crossed one of its biggest hurdles.

As Airport Commission Chairman Rod Hall put it:

“Washington Manassas Airport has officially entered the chat.”
