A handwritten note handed to flight attendants turned an ordinary Air Canada flight into an unusual international incident.

Air Canada Flight AC1730 was flying from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to Montreal-Trudeau International Airport on September 20 when a female U.S. citizen seated near the front of the aircraft reportedly began displaying unusual behavior.

According to reports, crew members checked on the passenger during the flight. She reportedly told them she was taking medication for mental health conditions and later handed flight attendants handwritten notes containing a request for asylum in Canada.

The crew informed the flight deck, but the Boeing/Airbus flight continued toward Montreal rather than diverting. Reports indicate the passenger remained calm in her seat and was not considered a threat to the aircraft.

After traveling roughly 2,178 miles, AC1730 landed safely at Montreal-Trudeau Airport.

The unusual situation continued after landing. Canadian border officials met the aircraft, and the woman was escorted from the plane while other passengers remained seated.
