A groundbreaking test flight has demonstrated how aircraft could navigate accurately over vast stretches of ocean without relying on GPS.

The Defense Innovation Unit’s (DIU) MagNav program successfully tested a quantum-sensing navigation system aboard an Embraer 170, flying from Seattle’s Puget Sound to southern Alaska and back over the Pacific Ocean.

The system uses quantum sensors to detect the Earth’s natural magnetic field, effectively turning the planet’s magnetic signatures into an invisible navigation map.

During the 4-hour, 23-minute GPS-free flight, MagNav improved position accuracy by 89% compared with traditional backup navigation methods. Navigation data was streamed to pilots in real time through standard tablets.

The technology addresses a major weakness of conventional backup navigation systems: inertial sensors can gradually drift, while visual landmarks are unavailable over featureless oceans.

DIU says the Earth’s magnetic field provides a navigation reference that cannot simply be blocked or spoofed like satellite signals.

Honeywell Aerospace developed the prototype after being selected from 72 companies that applied to the program. The next major demonstration is expected aboard a U.S. military C-17 Globemaster III later this year.

The successful test could represent an important step toward resilient navigation for both military and potentially commercial aviation when GPS signals are unavailable or disrupted.
