Student Pilot Safely Lands Aircraft After Instructor Exits Plane Mid-Flight in Argentina
A tragic aviation incident unfolded over Toledo, Argentina, on Monday, July 6, when flight instructor Leandro Bertazzo reportedly exited a Cessna C-150 during a training flight, leaving his 22-year-old student pilot alone at the controls.
According to reports, Bertazzo, 42, removed his headset, gathered his personal belongings, unfastened his seatbelt, opened the aircraft door, and exited the plane while it was still airborne. His body was later found in a nearby field after a search by local authorities.
Despite having only limited flying experience, the student pilot remained calm under immense pressure. She immediately notified authorities and successfully flew the aircraft back to the airfield, completing a safe landing without further incident.
Eduardo Alvarez, director of Flying Parrot Córdoba, praised the student’s remarkable composure and skill, saying she was “very shaken, but with complete professionalism she flew the plane to the airfield and made a perfect landing.” He described her actions as “clear, decisive, mature and professional.”
Alvarez also expressed shock over the tragedy, remembering Bertazzo as someone who was “always smiling.” According to reports, Bertazzo reportedly told his student moments before exiting the aircraft, “You know what to do, keep moving forward.”
Local media reported that Bertazzo had previously received neuropsychiatric treatment, though only close family members were reportedly aware. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
