Single-Engine Sprint to Safety: IndiGo Flight Lands Safely in Delhi After Mid-Air Engine Failure

On Mar 28th 2026, a Corendon Airlines Boeing 737-800 operating on behalf of IndiGo as flight 6E-579 from Visakhapatnam to Delhi experienced an engine failure during its approach, prompting a high-alert response on the ground.

The aircraft, registered TC-CON, was descending toward Delhi when one of its CFM56 engines failed. Despite the sudden loss of power, the flight crew maintained full control of the aircraft and continued the approach using standard single-engine procedures.

Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the pilots requested a priority landing. Authorities at Indira Gandhi International Airport declared a full emergency, with firefighting and rescue services positioned along the runway in preparation for the arrival.

The aircraft touched down safely on runway 28 without further incident, bringing relief to the 161 people on board. No injuries were reported.

The airline later described the occurrence as a technical snag detected shortly before landing, while India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation confirmed the emergency response was activated following the reported engine failure.

Incidents involving engine failures, though rare, are accounted for in aircraft design and pilot training, allowing modern jets to continue safe operations even with reduced power. The safe outcome in this case underscores the effectiveness of those systems and the crew’s handling of the situation under pressure.
