Former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III revealed he was aboard a United Airlines flight that was forced to make an emergency return to Houston after what he described as the aircraft’s right engine catching fire shortly after takeoff.
“We heard 15 straight loud bangs and immediately knew something was wrong,” Griffin posted on social media. “Thankfully the pilots were able to get us and every passenger back safe and sound with zero injuries.”
United Flight 102, operating from Houston to Munich, safely returned to George Bush Intercontinental Airport after crews reported an engine issue. Passengers deplaned normally, and the airline arranged a replacement aircraft for the journey.
While the incident ended safely, Griffin’s account highlights just how frightening an in-flight engine malfunction can be for passengers. Thanks to the flight crew’s quick actions and training, everyone onboard returned safely without injuries.
