Sudden Turbulence at 38,000 Feet Leaves Crew Member Seriously Injured on Pacific Flight

On Mar 29th 2026, a United Airlines Boeing 787-9, registration N23994, operating flight UA-115 from San Francisco to Papeete, encountered turbulence over the Pacific Ocean that resulted in serious injury to a crew member.

The aircraft, carrying 151 passengers and 12 crew, had been cruising at various altitudes between FL300 and FL380 when it encountered moderate turbulence at an undetermined point along the route. During the event, one flight attendant sustained serious injuries.

Despite the sudden disturbance, the flight crew maintained control of the aircraft and continued the long-haul journey across the Pacific. The aircraft landed safely in Papeete, where medical personnel were standing by to assist upon arrival.

In a statement, the airline confirmed that no passengers were injured and that the affected crew member received immediate medical attention after landing.

The National Transportation Safety Board has opened an investigation into the occurrence and classified it as an accident due to the severity of the injury sustained.

Turbulence-related injuries remain one of the most common in-flight safety risks, particularly for cabin crew who are often on their feet during service. This incident highlights how even moderate turbulence can pose serious hazards when it occurs unexpectedly at cruising altitude.
