Smoke at 19,000 Feet: Delta Widebody Turns Back Mid-Climb Over Cockpit Alert

A transatlantic departure was cut short when smoke indications in the cockpit forced a widebody jet to halt its climb and return to its departure airport, prompting an emergency response on the ground.

On Mar 16th 2026, a Delta Air Lines Airbus A330-300, registration N826NW, operating flight DL-132 from Detroit to Amsterdam, was climbing out of runway 22R when the crew detected smoke in the cockpit.

As the aircraft passed through approximately FL190, the climb was stopped and the crew initiated procedures to handle the situation. Given the uncertainty surrounding the source of the smoke, the pilots made the decision to discontinue the flight and return to Detroit.

The aircraft landed safely back on runway 22R about 40 minutes after departure and subsequently taxied to the apron under its own power. Emergency services had been alerted and were standing by due to reports of smoke in the cockpit.

While initial reports from emergency responders focused on smoke in the flight deck, the airline later indicated that some smoke had also been present in the cabin, adding to the urgency of the situation.

Passengers disembarked normally after arrival, and the scheduled long-haul rotation to Amsterdam was cancelled as the aircraft underwent inspection.

Smoke or fumes events remain among the most serious in-flight scenarios, as the source is not always immediately identifiable. In this case, the crew’s prompt response and decision to return ensured the aircraft was back on the ground quickly, minimizing risk and allowing for a thorough investigation into the cause.
