Mid-Air Scare: Vape Ignites on Virgin Australia Flight, Forces Go-Around Over Melbourne

A routine domestic flight turned tense in its final moments when a passenger’s device suddenly ignited, prompting swift action from the crew and an unexpected go-around.

On March 15th 2026, a Virgin Australia Boeing 737-800, registration VH-YFU, operating flight VA-328 from Brisbane to Melbourne, was descending toward runway 27 when a passenger’s vape device caught fire inside the cabin.

The sudden ignition prompted the flight crew to initiate a go-around, prioritizing safety while the situation was brought under control. Cabin crew quickly secured the device, preventing further escalation, as the aircraft repositioned for another approach.

According to the airline, the incident involved an e-cigarette that ignited in a passenger’s pocket, leading the crew to declare a PAN, signaling urgency but not immediate danger. The event highlighted the growing safety concerns surrounding lithium battery-powered personal devices onboard aircraft.

After stabilizing the situation, the flight continued for a safe landing on runway 34 approximately 15 minutes later. Emergency services were already on standby and followed the aircraft to the apron, where firefighters boarded and removed the device from the cabin.

Passengers disembarked normally, and no injuries were reported.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about five hours before returning to service, following inspections and safety checks.

On March 17th 2026, Australia’s Australian Transport Safety Bureau confirmed the sequence of events, noting that the ignition occurred during descent and that the crew had responded appropriately by declaring a PAN and managing the situation in accordance with procedures.

The incident serves as another reminder of the potential risks posed by lithium-powered devices in flight, even during routine operations.
