Travelers heading into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) faced delays Monday after the FAA temporarily paused some incoming flights because of staffing shortages at a key regional air traffic control facility.
The problem centers on Southern California Terminal Radar Approach Control (SCT), which manages a huge stretch of airspace covering much of Southern California.
The facility handles traffic from north of Burbank to the U.S.–Mexico border, and from San Bernardino westward to Santa Catalina Island — making it a critical link for flights approaching and departing the region.
The FAA warned that a traffic management program was delaying some arriving flights and that departure schedules could also be affected.
Passengers flying through LAX are being urged to check directly with their airlines for the latest flight status.
With LAX among the busiest airports in the United States, even temporary staffing problems at a major radar facility can quickly ripple across hundreds of flights.
