Fumes Force Quick Turnback: Wizz Air Jet Returns Minutes After Takeoff

On Apr 1st 2026, a Wizz Air Airbus A321-200N, registration HA-LGL, operating flight W4-3141 from Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport to Rome Fiumicino Airport, was forced to return shortly after departure due to fumes detected in the cabin.

The aircraft had just departed runway 08R and was climbing out when the crew reported the presence of fumes and requested to level off at 5,000 feet. Treating the situation with caution, the pilots discontinued the climb and prepared for a return to Bucharest.

The aircraft remained under full control throughout and positioned for a safe landing back on runway 08R approximately 20 minutes after takeoff. Emergency procedures were followed as required, though no injuries were reported among passengers or crew.

As a result of the incident, the original flight was delayed while a replacement aircraft, another Airbus A321neo registered 9H-WMD, was dispatched to complete the journey to Rome. The replacement flight eventually arrived with a delay of about eight hours.

The affected aircraft remained on the ground in Bucharest for further technical inspections around 12 hours after its return.

Fume-related events, while not uncommon in aviation, are treated with utmost seriousness due to the potential risks they pose. The crew’s prompt response ensured the safety of all on board and a controlled outcome to the situation.
