Engine Shut Down Mid-Approach: ANA Widebody Lands Safely in Sapporo

On Apr 1st 2026, an All Nippon Airways Boeing 777-200, registration JA745A, operating flight NH-65 from Tokyo to New Chitose Airport, experienced an engine-related issue during the critical approach phase.

As the aircraft was descending toward Sapporo, the crew received indications of high oil temperature in one of the Pratt & Whitney PW4090 engines. Following standard safety procedures, the pilots shut the affected engine down to prevent further risk.

Despite operating on a single engine, the aircraft remained fully controllable. The crew continued the approach and carried out a safe landing at New Chitose Airport without further complications.

The airline later described the landing as normal, emphasizing that the situation was handled in accordance with established procedures. All 317 passengers and 10 crew on board were safe, and no injuries were reported.

Following the arrival, the aircraft remained on the ground in Sapporo for inspections, with maintenance teams working to determine the root cause of the elevated oil temperature.

Engine shutdowns in flight, while uncommon, are procedures pilots are extensively trained for, and this incident once again demonstrated the robustness of modern aircraft systems and crew preparedness in ensuring a safe outcome.
