Condor A330-900 Declare PAN PAN, Crew Dons Oxygen Masks

Jan 7th 2026 : A Condor Airbus A330-900 operating a long-haul flight from Frankfurt/Main to Toronto, Canada, returned to its departure airport shortly after takeoff following a technical issue that prompted the flight crew to don oxygen masks.

The aircraft, registered D-ANRL and operating flight DE-2402, departed Frankfurt’s runway 25C and was climbing normally when the crew stopped the climb at flight level 280 (FL280), reporting a technical problem. Approximately four minutes later, the crew advised air traffic control that they had donned their oxygen masks and requested to return to Frankfurt.

About seven minutes after the decision to return, the crew escalated the situation by declaring a PAN PAN and requested a parking position on the apron to allow for the rapid opening of aircraft doors after landing. The aircraft landed safely back on Frankfurt’s runway 25C around 55 minutes after departure.

According to a listener monitoring Maastricht Area Control Centre frequencies, the aircraft, using the callsign CFG402, requested to level off at FL280 due to a technical issue at approximately 12:20 UTC while south of Hannover (EDDV). At 12:24 UTC, the crew reported they were using oxygen masks and intended to return to Frankfurt. At 12:31 UTC, they declared PAN PAN and specifically asked for an apron parking position upon arrival to expedite passenger handling. Maastricht ATC subsequently cleared the aircraft direct to waypoint DF680, assigned runway 25L, and handed the flight over to Rhine ATC for the return.

No injuries were reported, and the return was conducted without further incident. A replacement Airbus A330-900, registered D-ANRK, was dispatched and later completed the flight to Toronto with a total delay of approximately 9.5 hours.

As of about 29 hours after landing, the occurrence aircraft remains on the ground in Frankfurt undergoing technical inspection. Condor has not released further details regarding the exact nature of the technical problem that led to the crew’s decision to use oxygen masks and return to the departure airport.
