A new chapter in aviation history has begun for Natchez, Mississippi, as United Airlines officially restored commercial air service to the city for the first time in over three decades.

On Wednesday, United Express Flight 5086, operated by SkyWest using a 50-seat CRJ-200 regional jet, landed at Natchez-Adams County Airport from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to a standing ovation from hundreds of residents, local officials, and aviation supporters gathered inside the newly renovated terminal.

Shortly afterward, Flight 5139 departed Natchez for Houston, giving local travelers seamless access to United Airlines’ extensive global network with just one ticket and one check-in. Although the departure was briefly delayed due to nearby lightning, the milestone flight marked the official return of scheduled commercial aviation to the city.

The achievement is the result of nearly four years of planning, investment, and collaboration. The effort began in July 2022 with the launch of the JET Natchez initiative, led by Mayor Dan Gibson and supported by Adams County officials, aviation consultants, and numerous federal, state, and local partners.

In an impressive feat, the airport’s largest hangar was transformed into a modern 10,000-square-foot passenger terminal in just four months. The new facility features TSA security screening and modern passenger amenities, bringing Natchez in line with regional commercial airports across the country.

Adding to the celebration, U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith announced more than $500,000 in additional federal funding to support the airport’s newly renovated terminal, reinforcing the federal government’s commitment to strengthening regional air connectivity.

Airport Director Carl Beasley, a retired FAA executive who led the airport’s transformation, praised the dedicated team behind the project and expressed optimism about the airport’s future growth. Community leaders emphasized that the return of commercial air service will boost tourism, attract new businesses, strengthen economic development, and make Natchez more accessible than ever before.

With nonstop flights connecting Natchez directly to Houston and onward to hundreds of destinations worldwide through United’s global network, residents can now begin their journey close to home while visitors have an easier gateway to one of America’s most historic cities.

After more than 30 years without scheduled airline service, Natchez is officially back on the aviation map—and its future is taking flight.
