On Mar 29th 2026, a mid-air turbulence encounter turned hazardous for passengers aboard a Malta Air Boeing 737-800 operating on behalf of Ryanair as flight FR-4017 from Porto to Milan Malpensa Airport.
The aircraft, registered 9H-QEP, was cruising at FL340 over the Pyrenees when it encountered severe turbulence. The sudden and violent movements caused unsecured cabin baggage to fall from overhead bins, striking passengers and resulting in injuries.
Four passengers were hurt during the ঘটনা, including one who suffered a dislocated shoulder and another who sustained a neck injury. Faced with the situation, the crew made the decision to divert to Toulouse, where the aircraft landed safely approximately 20 minutes later.
Emergency services attended the aircraft upon arrival to assist the injured. The prompt diversion ensured those affected received medical attention as quickly as possible.
A replacement Boeing 737-800, registration 9H-QAS, was arranged to complete the journey to Milan, arriving with a delay of about 3 hours and 45 minutes.
The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground in Toulouse for around 14 hours before returning to service.
