Air Botswana ATR-72 Strikes Runway Lights During Wet Landing in Gaborone

On December 13, 2025, an Air Botswana Avions de Transport Régional ATR-72-212A, registration A2-ABL, operating flight BP-208 from Johannesburg, South Africa, to Gaborone, Botswana, was involved in a runway excursion during landing on runway 08 at Gaborone.

During the landing roll in heavy rain, the aircraft drifted to the left and struck runway edge lights before the crew regained the centerline. The aircraft vacated the runway safely and taxied to the apron. No injuries were reported.

Botswana’s Directorate of Accident Investigation (DAI) confirmed that aquaplaning led to a tyre puncture, contributing to the loss of directional control on the wet runway. The aircraft sustained minor damage, remained grounded for 11 days, and returned to service on December 24, 2025. The occurrence is under investigation.
