A helicopter providing aerial coverage for NBC Los Angeles and Telemundo 52 crashed in Chatsworth, Los Angeles, Tuesday evening while crews were covering a deadly Metro bus collision.

The Eurocopter AS350 B2 was operated by Angel City Air and was carrying aerial photojournalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw. Both were killed in the crash. A third victim, identified as 29-year-old Edy Gutierrez Mejia, was on the ground.

The helicopter went down shortly before 7 p.m. in a parking lot near a self-storage facility and burst into flames. The fire spread to nearby parked vehicles, while two other people were taken to hospital with injuries.

Witness Zareh Sevanesian said the helicopter appeared to be swaying and gradually losing altitude before crashing. “Something didn’t look right,” he recalled.

Moreno, a Southern California journalist who joined Angel City Air’s helicopter team in 2010, was well known to NBC Los Angeles and Telemundo 52 viewers. Marciniw was also a Southern California native and experienced pilot.

The crash happened just hours after a separate fatal collision involving a Los Angeles Metro bus and an SUV on Nordhoff Street and De Soto Avenue. Two bus passengers were killed in that crash, and several others were injured.

The helicopter was one of several aircraft covering the earlier collision.

The NTSB is leading the investigation with assistance from the FAA. Investigators are examining video recorded inside the helicopter moments before the crash, including sounds indicating changes in engine speed and possible cockpit warning tones.

The NTSB said the recording will undergo sound-spectrum analysis, while investigators are also seeking cellphone and other video from witnesses.

No cause of the helicopter crash has been determined. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days.

The tragic sequence left five people dead in Chatsworth in two separate incidents, prompting condolences from Los Angeles officials, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and the NBC4 and Telemundo 52 teams.
