A routine transatlantic flight turned into a desperate medical emergency Thursday, August 27, when a male passenger aboard American Airlines Flight AA52 suffered a serious medical crisis during the final stages of the journey from Miami to Rome.
The Boeing 777 had spent roughly eight hours crossing the Atlantic and was descending toward Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport when the passenger suddenly required urgent medical attention.
The cabin crew appealed for medical professionals onboard, and remarkably, five doctors who were traveling as passengers stepped forward. They worked together to perform resuscitation efforts in the aircraft, desperately attempting to save the man’s life as the plane continued toward Rome.
With the medical situation deteriorating, the flight crew declared a general emergency by squawking 7700, alerting air traffic control that the aircraft required priority handling.
Flight AA52 landed safely on Runway 16R at Rome at around 11:30 p.m. CEST, where emergency medical teams were waiting on the ground.
Sadly, despite the efforts of the five doctors and responding emergency personnel, the passenger could not be saved and was pronounced dead.
The man’s identity has not been publicly released. His daughter later expressed her gratitude to the doctors who tried to save her father, describing his death as a “horrible nightmare” and saying he passed away while doing what he loved — traveling.
The heartbreaking incident highlights the extraordinary challenges crews and passengers can face when a medical emergency occurs thousands of feet above the ground — and the willingness of medical professionals to step forward when help is urgently needed.
