Norwegian Air temporarily replaced its Instagram profile picture with the British Airways logo after losing a friendly social media wager linked to the FIFA World Cup quarter-final between England and Norway.

Ahead of Saturday’s match, the two airlines agreed that the losing side would display the winner’s logo as its Instagram profile picture for 24 hours. England’s 2-1 victory over Norway meant Norwegian Air had to honour the bet.

“While the tournament is over for us, this friendly bet will forever live in all our hearts. We wish England and British Airways all the best in the semi-final, and we sincerely hope you’ll get to bring football home!” Norwegian Air wrote alongside the temporary profile picture.

British Airways joined the light-hearted exchange by commenting on Instagram: “Don’t make bets you can’t win.”

England came from a goal down to defeat Norway 2-1 and book a semi-final clash against defending champions Argentina. The defeat ended Norway’s historic World Cup campaign, which saw the team reach the quarter-finals for the first time.

After the 24-hour challenge ended, Norwegian Air restored its original Instagram profile picture and shared another humorous message: “Our logo is back … until our social media team gets another idea.”

The friendly exchange between the two airlines quickly attracted attention from football and aviation fans, becoming one of the tournament’s more entertaining off-field social media moments.
