American Airlines has operated a special humanitarian relief flight from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS), delivering more than 9,000 pounds of emergency supplies to communities affected by the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24.

The relief mission was carried out using one of the airline’s Boeing 737 aircraft and transported a wide range of essential items, including bottled water, nonperishable food, diapers, baby formula, baby wipes, hygiene products, and other critical supplies needed by families impacted by the disaster.

The airline said the operation was organized immediately following the earthquakes to provide urgent assistance to affected communities and support its employees in Venezuela. American Airlines Vice President of International and Inflight Dining Operations José A. Freig stated that the carrier remains committed to standing with the Venezuelan people as they recover and rebuild from the disaster.

The relief flight also highlights American Airlines’ long-standing relationship with Venezuela. Caracas became the airline’s first destination in South America in 1987. After a seven-year suspension, American resumed nonstop passenger service between Miami and Caracas on April 30, becoming the first U.S. airline to reconnect the two countries. Service to Maracaibo is currently scheduled to resume on July 14.

Passenger operations to Caracas remain temporarily suspended through July 10 due to the closure of Simón Bolívar International Airport following the earthquakes. American Airlines said commercial flights will resume once airport authorities reopen the airport for normal operations.

To assist affected travelers, the airline has implemented a travel waiver, allowing eligible customers to rebook their flights without change fees, cancel their trips, or request refunds. It has also capped fares on direct flights to and from Caracas to help minimize the financial impact on passengers during the recovery period.

In addition to the relief flight, American Airlines is supporting humanitarian efforts through partnerships with the American Red Cross and UNICEF. AAdvantage members can donate to earthquake relief campaigns and receive bonus miles for eligible contributions, while customers can also donate miles through the airline’s Miles for Social Good program to support ongoing recovery efforts.
