A routine landing turned into a frightening incident at Japan’s Yao Airport when a Honda HA-420 HondaJet overshot the runway after touchdown on Friday 26 June 2026, leaving the aircraft with substantial damage and triggering an investigation.
The light business jet was landing on Runway 27 when it was unable to stop within the available runway length and continued beyond the paved surface. Fortunately, there was no post-crash fire or fuel leak, and everyone on board escaped without serious injuries.
Photos from the airport show the sleek business jet resting beyond the runway with visible damage to its landing gear and underside, highlighting how quickly a normal landing can turn into an emergency.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and secured the aircraft while airport operations were assessed. Aviation investigators are now examining the circumstances surrounding the runway excursion, including weather conditions, aircraft performance, runway surface conditions, and pilot actions during the landing.
The HondaJet, developed by Honda Aircraft Company, is one of the world’s most advanced very light business jets, known for its distinctive over-the-wing engine mounts, high cruise speed, and advanced avionics. Despite its excellent safety record, this incident serves as a reminder that runway excursions remain one of the most common types of aviation accidents worldwide.
Thankfully, this event ended without fatalities, but the aircraft sustained significant damage and will undergo a detailed technical assessment as investigators work to determine exactly what caused the overrun.
