A 19-year-old university student in China has successfully challenged an airline after his flight departure time was moved forward by just 10 minutes.

Hu Dongcheng, a freshman and aviation enthusiast, sued Hainan Airlines after his Shenzhen-to-Hohhot flight was rescheduled from 7:40 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. one week before departure. Concerned about missing the flight, he booked a hotel near the airport the night before and later sought reimbursement for the additional expense.

The airline initially rejected his request, arguing that its policy only allowed free changes or refunds when a flight was moved forward by more than 15 minutes. Hu disagreed, saying passengers face penalties if they are late, while airlines can alter schedules without taking responsibility for the inconvenience caused.

After the lawsuit was filed, Hainan Airlines agreed to fully reimburse his hotel costs and pledged to revise its policy regarding schedule changes.

The case has sparked widespread discussion about passenger rights and airline accountability. Following the dispute, other Chinese carriers, including Tianjin Airlines and Spring Airlines, reportedly removed their own 15-minute threshold policies, allowing passengers to request free changes or refunds whenever airlines are responsible for schedule adjustments.

Many travelers have praised the student’s determination, saying the case highlights how even small schedule changes can significantly impact passengers relying on public transport connections, hotel bookings, and carefully planned travel arrangements.
