U.S. airlines are waiving flight-change fees ahead of a powerful nor’easter expected to affect the Northeast from Friday through Sunday.

American Airlines, United Airlines and JetBlue Airways are allowing eligible passengers traveling to airports across New York City, Boston and other New England locations to change their flights without paying change fees or fare differences, provided they travel before the middle of next week.

Federal forecasters are warning of strong winds, heavy rainfall and the potential for dangerous flooding as the storm develops.

As of Friday morning, flight operations across the Northeast remained largely normal, with minimal delays and relatively few cancellations scheduled for the weekend. Airlines are closely monitoring the storm’s projected track before deciding whether broader schedule reductions will be necessary.

During major winter storms and hurricanes, carriers often cancel significant portions of their schedules to prevent aircraft, crews and passengers from becoming stranded at affected airports.

The potential disruption comes just days after an equipment outage caused hundreds of flight cancellations affecting the New York and Philadelphia areas.

Travelers flying through the Northeast this weekend are being advised to check their flight status and airline waiver policies before heading to the airport.
