The RAF is investigating the crash of a Hawk T2 training jet near Pencarnisiog, Anglesey, after two pilots ejected moments before the aircraft struck the ground and burst into flames.
The aircraft had departed RAF Valley, a key RAF fast-jet training base. Footage appearing online shows what looks like flames coming from the rear/side of the aircraft during its take-off roll. As the jet climbed, the flames appeared to disappear.
Former RAF pilot and BBC security analyst Mikey Kay said the footage appeared to show flames coming from the side of the engine area rather than directly from the exhaust. He stressed that it is far too early to determine whether an engine failure caused the crash.
The video also captures the two pilots ejecting from the aircraft before it rapidly descends and crashes, with both parachutes deploying successfully.
The Hawk T2 is equipped with ejection seats designed to provide pilots with an escape option even during extremely low-speed or low-altitude emergencies.
Both pilots suffered minor injuries and are reportedly doing well, with the RAF expecting them to make a full recovery.
As a precaution, Hawk T1 and T2 training operations have been temporarily suspended while investigators examine the aircraft, flight data and available video evidence.
The crash site was brought under control by emergency services, and there were no reports of wider injuries.
The footage provides important clues, but the cause of the accident has not yet been established.
Investigation ongoing.
