A disruptive airline passenger who allegedly hurled racial and anti-gay slurs aboard an American Airlines flight has now lost his job after being identified and arrested.

Arthur Layne Lundeen, 67, was a real-estate agent affiliated with Tucson-based Long Realty. The company said it immediately ended its affiliation with him after learning about the incident, citing “concerning criminal charges.”

The dramatic incident unfolded Thursday night aboard American Airlines Flight 618 from Dallas to Newark.

According to passengers, Lundeen became increasingly belligerent near the end of the flight, directing racial slurs, vulgar language and offensive remarks toward flight attendants and other passengers.

Two passengers, including former law-enforcement officer Juan Mejia, intervened when the situation escalated. Lundeen was ultimately restrained using duct tape and zip ties, with photos showing him bound to his seat.

The aircraft was diverted to Baltimore because of the “disruptive customer.” Lundeen was removed from the aircraft and arrested by Maryland Transportation Police.

He faces state charges of second-degree assault and disorderly conduct.

The FBI is also investigating the incident and said it is conducting interviews before consulting with federal prosecutors about whether federal charges should be filed.

Long Realty said Lundeen is no longer associated with the company and emphasized that the alleged behavior was completely inconsistent with the professionalism, integrity, compassion and respect expected from its affiliates.

The incident left passengers facing an unexpected diversion — and turned one unruly flight into a criminal investigation.
