Newly declassified videos obtained by 60 Minutes reveal the extraordinary moments when two U.S. Air Force officers were rescued after their fighter jet was shot down deep inside Iran.

The pilots, identified only by their mission call signs “Alpha” and “Bravo” for security reasons, ejected in a mountainous region south of Isfahan. They landed roughly five miles apart — while Iranian forces were actively searching for them and bounties had reportedly been placed on their heads.

Alpha was rescued just eight hours after ejecting in an extremely risky daylight operation behind enemy lines. The U.S. military committed 21 aircraft to the mission.

“Anytime you go behind enemy lines in daylight, it’s gonna be dicey,” Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine said. But the threat to Alpha was so serious that commanders decided they had to act before Iranian forces found him.

Bravo’s rescue was even more remarkable.

Badly injured during ejection, Bravo’s parachute was damaged and he plunged toward the ground. Despite suffering a broken back and other injuries, he managed to climb a 7,000-foot ridgeline and wait for help.

Infrared footage captures two elite U.S. Air Force pararescuers finally reaching him. They grabbed Bravo and brought him safely to an American helicopter after roughly two days on the run.

In his first public interview, Bravo described seeing his rescuers as “one of the greatest moments of my life.”

And when the rescuers reached him, what did he say?

“Let’s go.”

The newly released footage offers a rare glimpse into the extraordinary risks involved in recovering American aircrew behind enemy lines — and the determination of the officers who survived against overwhelming odds.
