A Cessna 172K Skyhawk, registration N84907, was approaching the Los Angeles area when the pilot reported serious engine problems and very low power.
The situation quickly became critical. The pilot told BUR Approach that the engine was running roughly and was “about to quit,” then urgently requested vectors to the nearest airport.
With two people on board, the pilot reported that oil temperature and pressure appeared normal, but the engine was performing very poorly.
BUR Approach identified nearby Van Nuys and Whiteman Airports. As the engine problem worsened, ATC guided N84907 toward Whiteman Airport, which was approximately 1–2 miles ahead.
The controller calmly coordinated with other traffic, provided heading guidance and repeatedly updated the pilot on the airport’s position.
After spotting Whiteman Airport, the pilot chose to remain at altitude and circle before making an emergency descent toward Runway 12. ATC approved the maneuver and continued coordinating with Whiteman Tower.
Then came another tense moment: during the landing sequence, N84907 was instructed to go around.
The pilot re-entered the traffic pattern and prepared for another approach to Runway 12.
This time, the Skyhawk landed safely. After landing, the pilot confirmed that no additional assistance was required, and N84907 taxied to parking.
One of the most striking moments in the ATC audio came when the controller reassured the pilot:
“We got everybody watching out for you.”
From the initial engine failure warning to the final safe landing, the communication shows how pilots and air traffic controllers work together during a rapidly developing emergency.
Listen to the full ATC communication and experience the tense moments as N84907 fights to reach the runway safely.
