A Cathay Pacific Airbus A350 operating Flight CX257 from Hong Kong to London Heathrow was intercepted by Hungarian Air Force Gripen fighter jets after temporarily losing communication with Romanian air traffic control while flying through Romanian airspace on July 4.

The aircraft, carrying more than 300 passengers, was operating normally when it failed to establish radio contact with Romanian civilian air traffic controllers. As a precaution, NATO’s Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) protocol was activated, resulting in the launch of two Hungarian Gripen fighter jets to identify the aircraft.

According to Hungarian Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, the fighter jets took off from Kecskemét Air Base and made visual contact with the Airbus A350 near the Hungarian border. Shortly afterward, communication between the aircraft and air traffic control was restored, allowing the flight to continue safely to London Heathrow without any further issues.

Cathay Pacific confirmed that the aircraft experienced only a temporary loss of communication and stressed that the aircraft remained on its approved flight path throughout the incident. The airline stated that the safety of the aircraft and everyone on board was never compromised, communication was restored quickly, and the flight landed safely as scheduled. The crew reported the occurrence immediately, and the incident remains under investigation.

Hong Kong’s Civil Aviation Department (CAD) has expressed serious concern over the incident and has directed Cathay Pacific to submit a detailed report within one week.

Loss of communication with an aircraft is treated as a serious matter, particularly in European airspace close to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Romania borders Ukraine, and heightened regional security means authorities respond rapidly whenever an aircraft cannot be contacted.

Aviation experts explain that before scrambling military aircraft, air traffic controllers attempt several methods to re-establish contact, including relaying messages through nearby aircraft. If those attempts fail, fighter jets are dispatched to visually identify the aircraft and ensure there is no security threat.

Experts also note that radio communication can occasionally be disrupted by equipment issues, atmospheric conditions, or electronic interference. Given the flight’s proximity to the conflict zone, interference remains one possible explanation, although no official cause has been confirmed.

Military interception of a civilian aircraft does not necessarily indicate danger or hostile intent. It is a standard international safety and security procedure whenever communication with an aircraft is unexpectedly lost.

The incident concluded safely, with Flight CX257 continuing to London Heathrow and landing without incident. No injuries were reported, and the aircraft completed its journey as scheduled while investigations continue into the temporary communication failure.
