American Airlines Flight Attendants Praised For Handling “Paranoid” Passenger Who Said Crew Poisoned Him

Air travel in the U.S. is never short on newsworthy stories. An American Airlines passenger has shared another story of an onboard incident involving a unique “medical emergency,” praising the airline crew for their “calm and professional” handling.

Fortunately, American Airlines crews are no strangers to unruly passengers and have a history of handling them in the best possible manner.

On a recent flight from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Philadelphia (PHL), a mentally unstable passenger had a meltdown that could have escalated into something much more serious had it not been for the professional flight attendants and helpful passengers on board.

The passenger chose Reddit to share the experience on the American Airlines flight from the previous night. They started with their reluctance and hesitation to post the story. Eventually, they decided to “show some appreciation to the flight crew last night who handled this as calmly and professionally as possible.”

After laying out the scenario of the circumstances on their return flight from Dallas, they said they managed to “book an aisle seat in the exit row on the jump seat side and had an open middle seat next to me.”

They went on to write that the passenger was having “some kind of manic, paranoid episode, demanding that the plane be landed immediately because he’s ‘having a medical emergency.'”

At this point, the standoff had been ongoing for about two hours. Even as the flight crew and other passengers, including a doctor who offered to try to help him breathe through it to settle down, were unable to calm the man down and were “getting him more riled up,” as he screamed about how “he doesn’t trust anyone on the plane because we’re all trying to attack him.”

About 45 minutes into the flight, the flight attendant reached out to the passenger, asking for their assistance if required.

The passenger wrote that the situation was already tense and ‘on edge’ when flight attendants approached them, asking for assistance if required, which they immediately and readily agreed to.

“Yes, ma’am – I’ve already been thinking that. He won’t get past me if it came to that,” the passenger assured the flight attendant as they got ready to act if the need arose. Thankfully, there were no further episodes beyond the continued ranting and raving from mid-plane. However, the disruptive flyer never came forward again or moved toward the emergency door.

The passenger wrote that despite a 45-minute delay at DFW, the flight made up time and landed in PHL 15 minutes ahead of schedule, indicating American Airlines’ urgency to land the plane as early as possible and hand the clearly distraught passenger over to authorities.

Landing and quickly taxiing to a stop, the American Airlines cockpit crew showed calm urgency as the aircraft came to a halt. “I’ve never landed in Philly so fast… no circling, no taxiing… just straight in, top speed, full reverse thrust when we hit the ground, hard turn off the runway right to the edge of Terminal C where cops and paramedics were waiting in the jetway,” the passenger wrote on Reddit.

Even though American Airlines passengers have frustratingly lost their First Class seating at boarding sometimes, the First Class passengers onboard the DFW-PHL flight were exemplary in their attitude. The passenger commended them for “collecting their own trays and trash for the first class FA [Flight Attendant] as he couldn’t do it from being on the cockpit side of the barricade.”

The ordeal ended safely, with all passengers and the aircraft under control. However, since the post was on Reddit, reactions and responses were expected, and the tone wasn’t entirely surprising either.
