Alaska Airlines is celebrating 40 years of service in San Diego with a major milestone: its 50th nonstop destination from San Diego International Airport.

Starting in December, the airline will launch twice-weekly nonstop flights to Loreto, Mexico, operated by SkyWest Airlines using Embraer E175 regional jets.

The new route strengthens Alaska’s position as a leading carrier between San Diego and Mexico while giving local travelers another direct option for a Mexican getaway.

Alaska first began flying from San Diego on December 1, 1986. Four decades later, its network has expanded significantly, especially following its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines.

The anniversary celebration also comes with a big giveaway. Forty winners will receive Atmos Rewards Gold status, while one grand-prize winner will take home 1 million Atmos Rewards points.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria called the 50th nonstop destination an exciting milestone, saying the additional service will create more travel opportunities, attract visitors and strengthen connections with Mexico.

Alaska says some employees who helped launch its first San Diego flight are still with the airline today, highlighting the carrier’s long-standing connection with the community.
