A tragic workplace accident at Montréal–Trudeau International Airport (YUL) has claimed the life of an airport worker after they were struck by an aircraft on Monday evening.

Emergency services were called to the airport at around 7:30 p.m. The Samsic employee was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead. The victim’s name and age have not yet been released.

Preliminary information suggests the aircraft may have been reversing when it struck the worker. Authorities have not yet confirmed exactly how the accident happened, and an investigation is underway.

Police said the incident is not currently being treated as a criminal matter. The investigation has been handed over to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), which handles workplace incidents involving federally regulated workplaces.

The aircraft involved was operated by French bee, a French long-haul airline that operates Airbus A350 aircraft. The collision reportedly occurred shortly before the aircraft was scheduled to depart for Paris. Images from the airport showed the aircraft surrounded by emergency vehicles.

The worker was employed by Samsic, which provides ground-handling and airport services including ramp operations, baggage handling, passenger services and operational coordination. Samsic has operated at YUL since 2023 and has more than 600 employees at the airport.

Yves Beauchamp, President and CEO of ADM Aéroports de Montréal, expressed condolences to the worker’s family, loved ones and colleagues, saying the loss of a member of the airport community “affects us all deeply.”

Airport operations experienced some disruption following the accident, but regular service resumed shortly afterward.

The circumstances surrounding the fatal accident remain under investigation.
