The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating a potentially dangerous runway incident at New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

The incident occurred on October 7, just before 4 p.m., when a business jet reportedly took off without clearance while a Delta regional flight was approaching to land on an intersecting runway.

The Delta flight was forced to abandon its landing approach and perform a go-around to maintain safe separation from the departing aircraft.

According to Flightradar24 data, the two aircraft came within approximately 1,000 feet of each other at their closest point.

The Delta aircraft was travelling at around 147 mph before climbing away, while the business jet was moving at approximately 103 mph.

Air traffic control audio reportedly captures a disagreement between the controller and the business jet pilot over whether takeoff clearance had been granted.

Delta confirmed that its crew initiated a go-around to ensure safe spacing with an aircraft departing from a nearby runway.

The FAA is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A go-around is a standard aviation safety procedure that allows pilots to abandon a landing approach when conditions are unsafe. In this case, the maneuver helped the Delta crew avoid a potentially serious conflict.
