Austrian Airlines A320 Returns to Vienna After Engine Issue

Jan 11th 2026 : An Austrian Airlines Airbus A320-200 returned to its departure airport after the flight crew identified a problem with one of the aircraft’s engines while en route to Italy.

The aircraft, registered OE-LXD, was operating flight OS-527 from Vienna to Milan Linate. While cruising at flight level FL320, approximately 50 nautical miles south of Salzburg, the crew detected a problem with one of the CFM56 engines.

Following standard procedures, the crew elected to discontinue the flight and return to Vienna as a precaution. The aircraft descended and routed back without further complications.

The A320 landed safely on Vienna’s runway 34 about 70 minutes after departure. There were no reports of injuries to passengers or crew.

Austrian Airlines later confirmed an engine-related issue as the reason for the return. As a result of the incident, the scheduled rotation was cancelled to allow for technical inspections and any required maintenance.

Such precautionary returns are a routine part of airline operations when technical anomalies arise, ensuring continued safety for passengers and crew.
