The aviation community in Fresno, California, is mourning the loss of 41-year-old certified flight instructor Danna Eady, who died after the aircraft she was piloting crashed Saturday afternoon near Sierra Sky Park Airport in northwest Fresno.

Eady was flying with her husband, Craig, and their two youngest sons when the aircraft went down near the bluff of the San Joaquin River and caught fire.

Emergency crews found Danna and Craig outside the wreckage with severe injuries. Danna was taken to hospital but later died from her injuries. The couple’s two young sons were found deceased inside the wreckage.

Craig Eady suffered third-degree burns and remains hospitalized.

Friends remembered Danna as an adventurous, outgoing and deeply passionate pilot who had dreamed of becoming a commercial airline pilot. She was also a respected veteran flight instructor who mentored aspiring pilots, including students at Reedley College.

“Danna was always just up for an adventure,” longtime friend and fellow flight instructor Nick Wilcox said. “She loved flying. She died doing what she loved.”

Wilcox described Eady as an exceptionally capable pilot, saying he believed she flew the aircraft as best as she could until she was no longer able to continue.

The crash has also drawn attention to the challenging location of Sierra Sky Park Airport. Its runway is just over 2,400 feet long and the airport sits between residential neighborhoods near the San Joaquin River, leaving limited options for pilots facing an emergency.

Investigators are now working to determine what caused the aircraft to crash.

Reedley College’s flight science department canceled classes following the tragedy as colleagues and students mourned a mentor who had made a lasting impact on the aviation community.

Friends say Danna’s legacy will live on through the pilots she trained and the many lives she touched.
