An unusual US Air Force C-17A Globemaster III has landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport after flying from Riga, Latvia—raising immediate questions about the purpose of the mysterious mission.
The aircraft, operating as RCH4555, departed Riga at around 8:50 a.m. Moscow time and landed in Moscow at approximately 10:04 a.m., according to flight-tracking data.
What makes the flight especially unusual is the aircraft’s recent history. The C-17 had arrived in Riga on August 23 from Camp Springs, Maryland, home to Joint Base Andrews, where aircraft supporting senior US government officials are based.
So, why Moscow?
The purpose of the flight has not been publicly explained. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow had no information about the US military aircraft, while Russian state media reported that no meetings with US administration representatives were scheduled in Moscow this week.
The C-17 Globemaster III is one of the US Air Force’s primary heavy transport aircraft, normally used to move troops, equipment and supplies. However, its capabilities also make it suitable for sensitive government and diplomatic missions.
A US military transport flying directly into Moscow is highly unusual—especially amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Moscow.
Was it a diplomatic mission? A personnel movement? Something else entirely?
For now, the real purpose of the flight remains unclear.
