The world’s largest passenger aircraft is about to play a key role in shaping the future of aviation.
Airbus has confirmed that the very first Airbus A380 ever built will become a flying testbed for CFM’s revolutionary RISE open-fan engine technology, with flight testing expected before the end of this decade.
The A380 was selected because of its unique four-engine configuration, allowing engineers to replace one engine with the experimental open-fan design while the remaining three provide safe operation. Its enormous cabin also offers ample space for advanced flight-test instrumentation and engineering equipment.
The Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines (RISE) program aims to deliver around 20% better fuel efficiency and lower CO₂ emissions compared to today’s most advanced narrowbody engines. The exposed open-fan architecture eliminates the traditional engine nacelle, improving aerodynamic efficiency while maintaining the high speeds expected from modern jetliners.
Alongside the RISE project, Airbus is also supporting the European-funded OFELIA and SWITCH programs, which are exploring hybrid-electric propulsion, heat-recovery technologies, hydrogen fuel cells, and advanced sustainable engine concepts. Some of these technologies are targeting fuel savings of up to 25%, while helping reduce both carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions.
The project represents one of the biggest propulsion experiments in commercial aviation in decades. If successful, the technology could power the next generation of single-aisle aircraft by the mid-2030s, making future flights significantly more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly.
For an aircraft once considered near the end of its commercial journey, the Airbus A380 is now getting an unexpected second life—helping develop the engines that could power aviation’s future.
