Philippine Airlines (PAL) has announced a major fleet expansion, committing to purchase up to 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft in what will become the airline’s largest-ever widebody aircraft order.
The announcement was made at the Farnborough Airshow, where Boeing confirmed that the agreement includes 15 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners with options for an additional five aircraft. The order, once finalized, will play a key role in PAL’s long-term fleet modernization strategy while supporting the airline’s growing regional and long-haul network.
PAL President and Chief Operating Officer Lucio C. Tan III said the investment reflects the airline’s confidence in the future of air travel and its commitment to providing a better passenger experience. The airline also highlighted that 2026 marks two major milestones—its 85th anniversary and 80 years of partnership with Boeing.
The new 787-10 fleet will complement Philippine Airlines’ existing fleet of 10 Boeing 777 aircraft, offering greater flexibility across medium- and long-haul routes. The Dreamliner is known for its fuel efficiency, consuming approximately 25% less fuel than the aircraft it typically replaces, while also reducing operating costs and carbon emissions.
Capable of carrying between 300 and 375 passengers over distances of up to 13,890 kilometers (7,500 nautical miles), the Boeing 787-10 will enable PAL to meet increasing passenger demand across Asia and international markets. Travelers will also benefit from the Dreamliner’s larger dimmable windows, improved cabin humidity, quieter cabin environment, and technology designed to reduce the effects of turbulence for a smoother flight.
Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope described the order as another milestone in the companies’ 80-year relationship, emphasizing that the advanced aircraft will help strengthen connections between the Philippines and destinations across Asia and beyond.
The announcement comes as Philippine Airlines continues expanding its international presence. Earlier this year, the carrier received an invitation to join the oneworld Alliance, further strengthening its position in the global aviation market.
With up to 20 new Dreamliners on the horizon, Philippine Airlines is positioning itself for the next phase of growth while investing in a more efficient, modern, and passenger-friendly fleet.
