A heartbreaking aviation tragedy unfolded in northern New York late Monday night when a small aircraft crashed just moments after departing Adirondack Regional Airport, claiming the lives of three members of the same family.
According to the New York State Police, the aircraft departed Adirondack Regional Airport at approximately 10:36 p.m. local time on July 13. Investigators said communication with the aircraft was lost shortly after takeoff while it was only about 100 feet above the ground, triggering an extensive overnight search.
Troopers searched the area where the aircraft disappeared from radar, and with the help of a police drone, located the wreckage in a remote area near Route 186 in the town of Harrietstown at around 2:06 a.m. Authorities said the aircraft was destroyed on impact, and all three occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
The victims were identified as 70-year-old Dr. Gabriele Jasper, his 33-year-old daughter Gabriella Hillgrube, and his 2-year-old granddaughter Guiliana Hillgrube. All three were residents of New Jersey.
Dr. Jasper was not only an experienced pilot but also a respected pain management physician who founded his own medical practice in Brick, New Jersey. Friends remembered him as a compassionate doctor who deeply cared for his patients and colleagues. Outside of medicine, he enjoyed racing cars, riding motorcycles, and spending time with his family.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has begun an investigation into the crash. Investigators will examine the aircraft, weather conditions, flight data, maintenance records, and other available evidence to determine what caused the aircraft to crash just moments after takeoff.
The loss of three generations of one family in a single accident has left the local community and loved ones in mourning. As investigators work to uncover the cause of the tragedy, the aviation community joins in extending heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of those who lost their lives.
