A United Airlines flight from Shanghai, China, to San Francisco was forced to make an emergency diversion to Tokyo Narita after a passenger allegedly became violent and disruptive during the trans-Pacific journey.

United Flight UA858, operated by a Boeing 777-300, departed Shanghai Pudong Airport with 285 passengers and 16 crew members on board. Around two hours after takeoff, the situation onboard escalated when a passenger reportedly began shouting, throwing items around the cabin, and behaving erratically.

According to passengers, the individual scattered documents from the seat pockets, repeatedly shouted profanities, hit herself, and accused cabin crew of trying to “oppress” her. During an attempt to calm the situation, a purser reportedly tapped the passenger on the shoulder, but was allegedly struck with an elbow in response.

Witnesses also said the disruption continued during meal service, with food packaging thrown onto the cabin floor while the passenger continued yelling. Air marshals reportedly intervened and issued warnings before the flight crew decided that diverting the aircraft was the safest course of action.

The Boeing 777 landed safely at Tokyo Narita Airport, where officers from the Chiba Prefectural Police boarded the aircraft and escorted the Chinese-speaking passenger off the plane.

Some passengers later described the incident as a combination of misunderstanding, overreaction, and mismanagement, while others praised the crew for prioritizing the safety of everyone onboard.

Following the diversion, a maintenance issue was also identified, further delaying the flight. After the necessary checks were completed, UA858 departed Tokyo and continued to San Francisco, ultimately arriving approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes behind schedule.
