A Father’s Day Story That Touched Every Passenger On Board

In a truly unforgettable aviation moment, Southwest Airlines Captain Jim Curtis completed his final commercial flight before retirement with the most special copilot he could have asked for — his daughter, First Officer Julia Curtis.

The emotional flight from Las Vegas, Nevada, to Oakland, California, took place on Captain Curtis’ 65th birthday, marking the end of an incredible 43-year flying career that included 21 years in the U.S. Air Force and 22 years with Southwest Airlines. Over those decades, he accumulated more than 18,000 flight hours and inspired countless aviators along the way.

Before departure, Julia surprised passengers with a heartfelt announcement, revealing that the captain beside her was not only her mentor and role model, but also her father. She shared how he taught her everything from walking and riding a bike to becoming a pilot, crediting him for inspiring her aviation journey.

Julia joined Southwest Airlines just four months ago through the airline’s Destination 225° pathway program, making the occasion even more meaningful. Flying her father’s final flight was, in her words, a “dream come true.”

The father-daughter duo also shared laughs with passengers, including Captain Curtis joking that despite having a full-time airline job, Julia was still on his phone plan. The cabin erupted with laughter as passengers playfully voted for her to stay on it forever.

As he reflected on his career, Captain Curtis became emotional, expressing confidence that aviation would bring his daughter the same fulfillment and opportunities it had given him throughout his life.
