A new lawsuit has been filed in Palm Beach County, Florida, aiming to halt the renaming of Palm Beach International Airport to “President Donald J. Trump International Airport.”
Attorney and congressional candidate Victoria Doyle filed the lawsuit seeking an injunction against the county, arguing that local residents — not the state government — should have the authority to decide the name of their airport. “We should get to choose the name of our airport,” Doyle stated.
The legal challenge follows a narrow 4-3 vote by Palm Beach County commissioners approving a trademark licensing agreement with the Trump Organization related to the name change. Supporters of the agreement, including County Mayor Sara Baxter, argued that the president deserves respect and that the agreement helps protect the county from potential legal issues.
Doyle’s case is connected to another lawsuit filed by local pilot George Poncy, who is challenging the Florida law that mandates the airport’s renaming. That law is set to take effect on July 1.
Critics of the change also point to the estimated $5.5 million cost for new signs, branding, and airport updates, arguing taxpayers should not bear the expense until courts decide whether the law is valid.
The county has declined to comment on the lawsuit while the litigation remains ongoing.
