A routine afternoon flight turned into a tense emergency over the waters of Maryland after a Progressive Aerodyne SeaRey LSA amphibious aircraft suffered an unusual mid-air malfunction near Ocean City Municipal Airport.
The privately operated 2015-built SeaRey LSA, registered as N808CM, was reportedly maneuvering near Ocean City when one of its stabilizing floats — also known as sponsons — suddenly detached during flight. With part of the aircraft’s water-stability system gone, the pilot was forced to make a quick decision and executed an emergency landing directly into Assawoman Bay behind the famous Seacrets area.
Emergency crews were alerted around 2:15 p.m. and rushed to the scene. Despite the frightening situation, the pilot managed to safely land the amphibious aircraft on the water, and remarkably, no injuries were reported. Officials confirmed the aircraft remained partially afloat after touchdown.
The SeaRey is a lightweight, two-seat amphibious flying boat specifically designed for both runway and water operations, making the successful water landing crucial in preventing what could have become a far more serious accident.
Authorities are now investigating what caused the float to detach mid-flight. The aircraft sustained minor damage, and further details are expected as investigators continue examining the incident.
This rare emergency landing quickly drew attention from beachgoers and locals who witnessed the aircraft sitting in the bay after the dramatic descent.
