Wildlife on the Runway: JetBlue Airbus Hits Coyote During Takeoff, Returns Safely

On Mar 24th 2026, a JetBlue Airways Airbus A320-200, registration N641JB, operating flight B6-1129 from Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport to John F. Kennedy International Airport, struck a coyote during its takeoff roll, prompting a precautionary return.

The aircraft had just departed runway 05 when the collision with the animal occurred. Despite the impact, the crew continued the climb to approximately 4,000 feet to ensure a safe airborne configuration before deciding to return to Providence.

The jet landed safely back on runway 05 about 25 minutes after departure, with no injuries reported among passengers or crew.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft struck a coyote while departing, and an investigation into the incident has been initiated.

Following the return, the aircraft remained on the ground for approximately two hours for inspection before being cleared to depart again. The flight subsequently continued to New York, arriving with a delay of about two hours.

Wildlife strikes during takeoff, while relatively rare, highlight the ongoing challenge airports face in managing animal activity near runways, where even brief incursions can pose significant risks to aircraft during critical phases of flight.
