Mystery Smell Sparks Mid-Air Turnback: American Eagle Jet Returns to Raleigh Shortly After Takeoff

On Mar 23rd 2026, a PSA Airlines Canadair CRJ-900 operating on behalf of American Airlines as flight AA-5201 was forced to return to its departure airport after an unusual odor was detected on board shortly after takeoff.

The aircraft, registered N638NN, had departed Raleigh-Durham International Airport en route to Philadelphia International Airport and was climbing out of runway 05L when the flight crew halted the climb at approximately 7,000 feet.

After assessing the situation, the crew made the precautionary decision to turn back to Raleigh, prioritizing passenger and crew safety amid the unidentified smell.

The aircraft returned and landed safely back on runway 05L about 25 minutes after departure, with no reports of injuries or further complications during the flight.

The airline later confirmed that the return was prompted by a smell detected on board, a scenario that is treated with high caution in aviation due to the potential link to electrical or mechanical issues.

The aircraft was taken out of service for inspection following the incident, as maintenance teams worked to identify and resolve the source of the odor before allowing the jet to resume operations.
