A routine domestic flight in the United States turned into an unusual sight and sound for residents on the ground after an aircraft experiencing electrical issues descended with what observers described as the distinctive noise of an emergency turbine.
On March 5th 2026, an American Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration N556UW, operating flight AA-1193 from Philadelphia to Salt Lake City, was climbing through about FL260 when the flight crew stopped the climb after encountering electrical problems that began affecting cockpit instruments.
The pilots initially descended while working through their procedures before attempting to climb again. As the situation developed, the crew turned the aircraft around with the intention of returning to Philadelphia while continuing to run checklists related to the electrical malfunction.
While assessing the issue, the crew ultimately opted to divert to Baltimore instead of continuing all the way back to Philadelphia.
During the diversion, people on the ground beneath the approach path reported seeing the aircraft flying unusually low while producing a very unusual sound. One observer noted the noise resembled that of a Ram Air Turbine (RAT), an emergency device that can deploy from the fuselage to generate hydraulic and electrical power if normal systems are compromised.
The aircraft continued toward Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and landed safely on runway 10 about 45 minutes after the onset of the technical problems.
No injuries were reported and the aircraft was able to taxi clear of the runway after landing. The diversion allowed maintenance teams to inspect the aircraft and determine the cause of the electrical malfunction that prompted the precautionary landing.
