TAP Air Portugal A330 Rejects Takeoff in Lisbon After Engine Compressor Stall

A TAP Air Portugal long-haul flight bound for Miami was forced to reject takeoff at Lisbon Airport on January 2, 2026, after experiencing an engine malfunction during the initial stages of the takeoff roll.

Flight TP225 was operated by an Airbus A330-200 registered CS-TON. The aircraft had been cleared for departure from runway 20 when the crew released the brakes and began engine acceleration. Shortly thereafter, the right-hand engine, a General Electric CF6, suffered a compressor stall at low speed.

The flight crew promptly restored directional control and brought the aircraft to a stop on the runway in accordance with standard procedures. No injuries were reported, and passengers disembarked normally after the aircraft was returned to the gate.

To minimize disruption, TAP Air Portugal arranged a replacement aircraft, an Airbus A330-900 registered CS-TUC, to operate the flight to Miami. The substitute aircraft departed later and arrived in Miami with a delay of approximately six hours.

As of about 26 hours after the rejected takeoff, the affected A330-200 remains on the ground in Lisbon while maintenance teams conduct inspections and carry out necessary repairs.

TAP Air Portugal stated that the crew acted appropriately and emphasized that safety remains the airline’s highest priority.
