Power Loss After Takeoff Sends United 767 Back to Amsterdam

On Jan 30th, 2026, a United Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N675UA, operating flight UA-908 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Chicago O’Hare, Illinois (USA), was forced to return shortly after departure due to an electrical system issue.

The aircraft had departed runway 18C and was climbing through FL130 when the flight crew stopped the climb after reporting a problem with a generator associated with one of the Pratt & Whitney PW4060 engines. Shortly thereafter, the crew advised air traffic control that a generator had dropped offline and that a return to the departure airport was required.

The Boeing 767 returned to Amsterdam and landed safely on runway 18R about 45 minutes after departure. No injuries were reported.

As a result of the incident, the flight was cancelled, leaving passengers to be rebooked on alternative services.

As of Feb 2nd, 2026, the aircraft remains on the ground in Amsterdam, indicating that maintenance inspections and troubleshooting are still ongoing to address the generator issue before the aircraft can be returned to service.
