A transatlantic flight from Europe to the United States was forced to divert over the Atlantic after crew members detected unusual odours inside the aircraft, prompting a precautionary landing in the Azores.
On March 6th 2026, a TAP Air Portugal Airbus A330-900, registration CS-TUK, operating flight TP-225 from Lisbon to Miami, was cruising at FL370 over the Atlantic Ocean when the crew reported an odour or fumes on board.
At the time, the aircraft was about 90 nautical miles northeast of Ponta Delgada Airport in the Azores. As a precaution, the crew elected to discontinue the transatlantic crossing and divert to the nearby island airport.
The widebody jet descended and landed safely on runway 12 in Ponta Delgada approximately 30 minutes after the diversion decision was made.
Local media outlets on the Azores initially reported that eight people from the aircraft were taken to local hospitals following the landing. Later reports, however, did not mention any hospitalisations, suggesting that the situation may have been precautionary.
Following the unscheduled landing, arrangements were made to continue the journey. Another Airbus A330-900 from the airline’s fleet, registration CS-TUR, was dispatched to Ponta Delgada to pick up the passengers and resume the flight to Miami.
The replacement aircraft was expected to deliver passengers to their destination with a delay of approximately 18 hours after the mid-Atlantic diversion interrupted the original flight.
