An easyJet flight operating from Milan Malpensa to Lamezia Terme experienced an in-flight engine failure on December 27, 2025, prompting emergency procedures and a precautionary landing at its destination airport.
Flight U23557 was operated by an Airbus A320-200 registered OE-IVZ. While descending through approximately flight level 250 toward Lamezia Terme, one of the aircraft’s CFM56 engines failed and reportedly emitted visible flames. The flight crew responded by shutting down the affected engine in accordance with standard procedures.
Following the engine shutdown, the aircraft entered a holding pattern, descending from about 6,000 feet to 3,000 feet to prepare for a single-engine approach. The aircraft subsequently landed safely on runway 10 at Lamezia Terme approximately 23 minutes after the engine failure.
No injuries were reported among passengers or crew, and emergency services were on standby as a precaution.
As of January 2, 2026—six days after the incident—the aircraft remains on the ground in Lamezia Terme while inspections and maintenance work continue.
easyJet stated that the crew acted appropriately and in line with established safety procedures, emphasizing that passenger safety remained the airline’s highest priority.
