Delta Air Lines A321 Diverts to Kansas City After In-Flight Engine Failure

Jan 3rd 2026 : A Delta Air Lines flight traveling from Denver to Detroit was forced to divert on January 3, 2026, after experiencing an engine failure while en route.

Flight DL2883, operated by an Airbus A321-200 registered N349DX, departed Denver International Airport carrying 169 passengers and six crew members. While cruising at flight level 350, approximately 40 nautical miles west of Kansas City, Missouri, the aircraft suffered a failure of its right-hand CFM56 engine.

Following standard procedures, the flight crew shut down the affected engine and elected to divert to Kansas City International Airport as a precaution. The aircraft descended and landed safely on runway 01L about 30 minutes later. Emergency services were on standby, and the landing was completed without incident. No injuries were reported.

To accommodate passengers, Delta arranged a replacement aircraft, another Airbus A321-200 registered N313DN, to continue the journey to Detroit. The substitute flight eventually reached its destination with a delay of approximately nine hours and fifteen minutes.

As of about 48 hours after the diversion, the affected aircraft remains on the ground in Kansas City while maintenance teams carry out inspections and repairs.

Delta Air Lines stated that the crew’s actions were in line with established safety protocols and reaffirmed that the safety of passengers and crew remains its highest priority.
